Our Commitment to Sustainability: How We're Reducing Food Waste in Auckland

New Zealand generates around 157,000 tonnes of food waste every year. That's a number we think about a lot. When we built Ms Online Shop, sustainability wasn't an afterthought. It was baked into every decision we made.

Packaging That Doesn't Outlive the Food

All of our chilled and perishable packaging is made from either recycled cardboard or compostable PLA (polylactic acid) derived from corn starch. Our insulated liners are wool-based: renewable, biodegradable and made right here in New Zealand. We've eliminated single-use plastic entirely from our packing process.

Partnering With Farms That Give a Damn

Every vendor on Ms Online Shop goes through our sustainability audit before going live. We assess water usage, packaging practices, soil health, and waste management. Vendors who meet our highest tier earn a 'Certified Green' badge on their store page.

“Sustainability isn't a marketing tactic for us. It's a filter. If a vendor doesn't meet our standards, they don't list on the platform.”

The Numbers So Far

  • 3.2 tonnes of food rescued from waste through our 'Near Best-Before' discount section
  • 100% of delivery vehicles in Auckland are EV or hybrid
  • 62% of vendors use certified sustainable growing practices
  • Partnership with Kiwi Harvest to donate unsold daily stock

What's Coming in 2026

Later this year we're launching a packaging return scheme. Drop your used insulated liners at any of our partner pickup points and we'll clean and reuse them. We're also working on a carbon footprint tracker that will show you the environmental impact of each item in your cart.

Small actions, at scale, make a real difference. Every order you place through Ms Online Shop instead of driving to a large supermarket saves approximately 1.2kg of CO₂. That adds up fast.
